How do I sign up for the StarCraft® II beta?

In order to sign up for the StarCraft II beta, you first need to register a Battle.net account. You can opt in to the beta for StarCraft II, as well as betas for future Blizzard Entertainment games, through our new beta opt-in process. To get started, simply click "Beta Profile Settings" in Battle.net Account Management.

To be considered, you must create a beta profile containing your system specifications (see below) and indicate which Blizzard Entertainment games you’re interested in beta testing -- be sure to check the box for the StarCraft universe. Once you’ve successfully uploaded a beta profile, the associated Battle.net account is added to a pool of potential beta testers.

What is a beta profile?

A beta profile is a snapshot of your current system specifications. It includes such information as how much RAM you have, available hard drive space, your graphics card and driver, and other information about your system. We gather this information to ensure that we are able to test our games on a wide range and distribution of systems.

How do I get selected to become a beta tester?

Participants for each beta test will be selected from the pool of eligible testers who have opted in based on their system specifications, beta-test preferences, and other factors, including pure luck. Opting in does not guarantee you will be selected to participate in a beta test.

How will I be notified if I am selected for a beta test?

In the event you are selected to participate in a beta test, you will receive an e-mail informing you and directing you to Battle.net Account Management. From there, you will be able to download the beta client and obtain a beta key. If chosen, you will need to agree to the StarCraft II Beta Agreement prior to installing the client.

I attended BlizzCon 2008 and received a code for the StarCraft II beta. Do I have to go through this process?

There is a separate process in place for players who received StarCraft II beta codes from BlizzCon 2008. To redeem your BlizzCon 2008 beta code, visit the beta sign-up page (don’t worry that the page says World of Warcraft), and enter the code from your BlizzCon 2008 card, along with a valid email address that you check often.

Once you’ve completed these steps, we will contact you via email at some point during the StarCraft II testing process with further instructions. Please note that in order to participate after your receive the invitation, you will need to sign up for a new Battle.net account (if you haven’t done so already).

Why do I have to download an application to create a beta profile?

Our beta opt-in application allows us to gather information about potential beta testers’ systems quickly and accurately, helping us ensure that the resulting pool of beta testers we select most closely represents the range and distribution of systems we wish to test.

How does the beta opt-in application work?

Running the beta opt-in application quickly and automatically generates a profile based on your system specifications. It then displays this information and asks if you wish to submit the specifications to create a beta profile for the Battle.net account you used to download the application.

Does the application also profile the software I have installed on my system?

No, the opt-in application simply scans the major hardware components of your system, along with your graphics card driver. Other system information, such as the contents of your hard drive, is not scanned.

Will entering multiple times improve my chances of being selected?

Each Battle.net account can only opt in once, so you are unable to opt in multiple times to improve your chances.

Will opting in early improve my chances of being selected?

Beta invitees will be selected periodically from the entire pool of players who have chosen to opt in and who meet the requirements. Opting in early doesn’t mean you’ll be invited sooner than someone who signs up after you.

I created a new Battle.net account, but I’m unable to opt in. Why?

In order for a Battle.net account to be able to opt in to upcoming beta tests, you must have at least one Blizzard Entertainment game that you own attached to the account. Please note that the World of Warcraft trial edition does not count toward this requirement. Having more than one game attached to an account or having specific games attached to an account will not affect your chances to be selected.

When does the StarCraft II beta test start?

We don’t have an exact start date to share at this time, but note that when it does begin, we will be adding additional regions to the beta test in phases. North America, Australia, and New Zealand will be the first regions to begin beta testing, and other regions will follow afterward in phases. We will have more information to share about all of these phases in the future.

The reason for setting up the beta in regional phases is that it takes time to set up and configure our testing infrastructure in each area. Bringing up one region at a time makes the overall testing process for StarCraft II and Battle.net more efficient from a development perspective, making the test more effective, and allowing us to complete the game more quickly than if we attempted to start the beta test in all regions at the same time. We will share more information about the start dates for the beta in different regions at a later date.
When I first signed up for a Battle.net account, I checked a box to indicate I wanted to participate in Blizzard betas, but I didn’t submit a beta profile with my system specs. Do I need to complete this new process?

Yes. In order to be considered for the StarCraft II beta and any other upcoming Blizzard Entertainment betas, you’ll need to upload your beta profile through the application found in Battle.net Account Management.

Will Battle.net be overhauled? Will there be new features?

There will be some exciting new changes and features to Battle.net that will help us ensure that StarCraft II will be the ultimate competitive online real-time strategy game. Some of the areas we're looking into include features that support online tournaments, eSports, and enhanced communication between players. We're not quite ready to go into further detail about Battle.net at this time, but we look forward to doing so in the future.




Will we still be able to play the original StarCraft on Battle.net after StarCraft II is released?

Yes, you will.

What steps are being taken to prevent cheating in multiplayer games?

We don't want to tip our hand to the people who may try to cheat on Battle.net, so we can't go into too much detail, but rest assured that security is one of our top priorities as we redesign and overhaul Battle.net, and we will take every precaution to ensure fairness in our online games. We've taken an aggressive stance against cheating in all of our games, and our players have overwhelmingly supported us in that, so we don't have any intention to make any changes in that regard.

Will there be a closed or open beta? How about a trial or demo version?

StarCraft II will have a beta test period in the future. However, it's still too early to determine the exact nature and timing of the beta. We also haven't decided yet whether there will be any trial or demo versions, but we'll be happy to share the news once final decisions have been made.


What are the system requirements for StarCraft II?

We'll have more details on specific system requirements closer to the release date.

Will StarCraft II include a map editor?

Yes, it will. We'll have more details on the features of the StarCraft II map editor at a later date.

Will there be a console version of StarCraft II?

StarCraft II Trilogy

What is the StarCraft II Trilogy?

The StarCraft II Trilogy consists of the base StarCraft II game and two subsequent expansion sets. StarCraft II is subtitled Wings of Liberty (working title) and will include a lengthy single-player campaign that focuses on the terrans and puts players in the role of Jim Raynor, one of the series' main heroes. The first expansion set, Heart of the Swarm (working title), will follow later and include a single-player campaign focusing on the zerg and Kerrigan, Queen of Blades. The second expansion set, Legacy of the Void (working title), will continue the story experience with a single-player campaign centered on the protoss.


Will we still be able to play multiplayer matches of StarCraft II with all three races?

Yes! From the beginning, StarCraft II will be a fully featured multiplayer game, and all three races will be available for competitive play.

How will the expansion sets impact multiplayer gameplay?

The expansion sets will add new content to each race for use in multiplayer matches. This could include additions such as new units, abilities, and structures, along with new maps and Battle.net updates.

If I buy StarCraft II but don't buy any of the expansion sets, will I still be able to play online?

Yes. This will work similarly to Warcraft III and the original StarCraft, which maintained separate online gaming lobbies and ladders for expansion set players and players with the base Warcraft III or StarCraft.

How long is each of the campaigns?

StarCraft II's terran campaign will consist of approximately 26 to 30 missions, and each expansion set will include a similar number of missions. This means that the complete StarCraft II Trilogy will include as many as 90 single-player missions. This allows us to create a truly epic story experience with a great variety of unique missions and gameplay types.

Why did you decide to release each race's campaign separately?

We're aiming to push the boundaries of storytelling and character development in RTS games through the unique single-player campaign design of StarCraft II. Players will be able to choose their mission path and technology upgrades for their army as they advance through the campaign. In order to make these choices meaningful while creating an epic story and well-developed characters for each faction, we needed to focus on a single race for a large number of missions.

The Trilogy also allows us to create more in-game and prerendered cinematics to tell the story in between missions. There will be more interactive sets and elements for players to explore during each campaign, along with other interesting design elements to differentiate the single-player game from multiplayer matches. For example, the technology choices within the terran single-player campaign will include special upgrades and unit types that are unique to the single-player game. These could include the ability to purchase classic units such as the wraith or firebat to add to Jim Raynor's army.

Are these three separate games? How much will all of these games cost?

The StarCraft II Trilogy will consist of the base StarCraft II game and two expansion sets. Pricing on these games hasn't been determined at this early stage; however, we've always charged an appropriate price for the content the player receives, and we will continue to release high-quality games that offer great value.

How long will it take to ship each expansion set in the Trilogy?

We're still focused on developing the base StarCraft II game, and all the content associated with the terran campaign, including the missions, cinematic cutscenes, and interactive sets. It's too early to provide an estimate on how long it will take to develop each of the expansion sets in the trilogy, but as always, we will take as much time as is needed to create the best possible gaming experience with each expansion set.

What is StarCraft II?

StarCraft II is the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game, and the sequel to the hit original, StarCraft. The game will include three completely distinct and balanced races, the protoss, terran, and zerg, which have been overhauled and re-imagined with a number of new units for each, as well as new tricks for some of the classic units that are returning.


When is the game coming out?

At this point, it's too early to provide an estimate of the release date. As with all Blizzard games, we will take as much time as needed to ensure the game is as fun, balanced, and polished as possible.

How will StarCraft II be different from StarCraft?

StarCraft II will run on a vibrant new 3D-graphics engine capable of rendering beautiful landscapes as well as massive army sizes. The speed, responsiveness, and epic-scale battles that made the original StarCraft such a memorable game are all realized in 3D with this brand-new engine.

We're also introducing a number of distinct new units to the protoss, terran, and zerg, and some of the familiar units that return in StarCraft II will have new tricks up their sleeves, which will give the game its own unique flavor. The maps themselves will also offer new interactive elements that enhance the strategic nature of the game and create more tactical points of interest for players to contest. One example of this is the Xel'Naga watchtower structure—when captured, it reveals line of sight over a large area of the map, creating an advantage for the player in control of the tower.

In addition, Battle.net will be overhauled with some new and exciting features to enhance online play and competition, while the single-player campaign will also offer some unique aspects for players to enjoy.

How many cinematic cut-scenes will be included?

We know that StarCraft II players will expect to see some Blizzard-quality cinematic content in the game, and we have definite plans to include multiple pre-rendered cinematics, starting with the intro movie. StarCraft II's advanced 3D engine also allows us to create numerous in-engine cutscenes to help tell the game's epic story. The Blizzard cinematics team is working closely with the StarCraft II development team to ensure that these in-engine cutscenes are as enjoyable and compelling to watch as the pre-rendered cinematic scenes.

How many races are in StarCraft II?

In StarCraft II, players will see the return of the protoss, terran, and zerg races. Our goal is to ensure that all the factions in the game play even more distinctly from one another than in the original StarCraft, while still maintaining the fine balance that helped make StarCraft a classic. We're also introducing a number of new units to each race, as well as modifying some of the familiar units returning in StarCraft II. With these design refinements and the new features we have planned for the single-player and multiplayer elements of the game, StarCraft II will offer a next-generation StarCraft experience.

Can you give some examples of the newest changes that you've put into the BlizzCon 2008 build of StarCraft II?

We're trying out some cool new mechanics, such as giving zerg ground units a movement speed bonus whenever they're on creep, the slimy base upon which the zerg create their structures. We've also made some changes to the protoss mothership. A new ability called vortex allows it to trap a group of units, rendering them unable to move or attack until the effect ends. The terran aircraft previously called the nomad is now called the nighthawk. It's gotten a visual facelift with an all-new unit model and a brand-new ability called “seismic thumper,” which slows nearby enemies and prevents zerg from burrowing. One thing to keep in mind is that we're trying out new mechanics and abilities all the time, so what you see here at BlizzCon is just a snapshot of where we're at right now and is all still subject to change.

It seems like there are sweeping balance changes almost every time I read about StarCraft II. What are the reasons for the changes?

As we go through various testing stages, the development team experiments a lot with the game balance. This can include adding, removing, and/or modifying various units, buildings, and special abilities within the game. Frequent changes to units and abilities are a natural part of our iterative development process as we strive to make StarCraft II as balanced and fun as possible.

What can you reveal about StarCraft II's single-player component?

The game's plot will pick up several years after the events of StarCraft: Brood War. Familiar faces will return—such as Jim Raynor, the reluctant terran hero from the original StarCraft—and new heroes and villains will emerge. The single-player campaign will allow players to interact closely with these characters while determining their own course through the game via mission choices and technology upgrades.

Hint: Turtle Tipping for 99 Lives

You can use the decades old turtle-on-the-stairs trick from Super Mario Bros. to get 99 lives in New SMB Wii. Go to world 2-3 and, at the end, right before the flag, you'll find a set of steps and a turtle ambling down them. If you time your jump just right you'll continue bouncing on the shell collecting lives until you max out at 99. For a video of this, check out the World 2-3 section New Super Mario Bros. Wii Guide. (Ed.'s note: we used to call this "Turtle Tipping" and I'm bringin' it back, baby!

Easter Egg: Sounds From Beyond the Grave

When you're playing multiplayer and one of the players runs out of lives mid-level, he or she can still contribute to the game from the Great Beyond. Each direction of the D-pad is mapped to a different sound effect. Hold a direction and hit the 1 and 2 buttons to trigger different sounds, including clapping, a horn, kick and snare drums, and of course cowbell. The unfortunate players waiting for the level to end can add a drum line to the music.

Hint: Protect Your Head

If you press 1 and shake the Wii remote to pick up a small object, like a turtle shell (as opposed to just picking it up with 1), you'll hold it above your head, protecting you from falling Bob-Ombs, etc.

Hint: Red Mushroom House Tomfoolery

When playing multiplayer you can steal your teamates' turn in the Red Mushroom House match game by performing a ground pound on him (jump and the press DOWN).

Hint: Double Ground Pound (Multiplayer)

With at least two human players you can perform a special double ground pound that has the ability to kill all nearby enemies much like a POW block. You'll need to time your ground pound (press JUMP then DOWN) so both players hit precisely at the same moment.

Hint: Flower Coins

Shake the Wii Remote to spin-jump on any of the small, dancing flowers in the game to make a coin appear.

Unlockable: Mushroom House Bonanza

Beat the game to make all the Mushroom houses in Worlds 1-8 reappear. Collect all the Star Coins and visit every Warp Cannon to make the houses reappear and stay for good.

Hint: Knock Out Marauding Enemies

On the world map you'll encounter marauding enemies. To avoid these map screen enemies you can activate a star from your item menu.

Unlockable: Save Anywhere

After you beat the game (beat World 8-Bowser's Castle) you'll be able to "hard save" anywhere you'd like. The option replaces the Quick Save option.

Hint: Mushroom Houses

In New SMB Wii, you can make a bonus Mushroom house appear on the map by saving Toad when he appears in a level. To do this, you'll need to head to a level with the white Toad marker. Release Toad from the ? Block he's trapped in -- near the beginning of a level, listen for the cries -- and run him all the way to the end of the level to make a Mushroom House spawn. The type of Mushroom house depends on the final digit of the time when you grab the flag at the end of the level.

• Green (1-Up cannon game) - Get Toad to the end of the level, hit flag when the last digit of the time ends in 0, 1, 2 or 3.
• Red (Match game) - Get Toad to the end of the level, hit flag when the last digit of the time ends in 4, 5, 6 or 7
• Gold (Star reward) - Get Toad to the end of the level, hit flag when the last digit of the time ends in 8 or 9

Note: In multiplayer, you can make a Mushroom House appear using the a similar timing method. Hit the flag when the time digits end in 00,11,or 22 for a green house; 33, 44, 55, 66, 77 or 88 for a red house; or 99 for a gold house.

Unlockable: Alternate Endings

Perform the actions below to unlock an alternate ending:

• Ending 1 (The Princess says, "Did I ever tell you about the Secret World?") - Beat the game once.
• Ending 2 (The Princess says, "Oh Mario, tell me about your adventure again!") - Beat the game a second time.

Beat the game to unlock World 9. Each level in World 9 is unlocked by gathering all of the coins in each of the Worlds 1-8:

If you get 99 lives, the maximum number of lives in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario will lose his hat! Once you beat a level with a full 99 count, Mario will appear hat-less on the map screen and in subsequent gameplay. You'll regain your hat once you lose a single life.

Unlockable: Save File Stars

Performing special actions will award you stars on your save file. Here are the stars you can earn:

• Star 1 - Beat the game (you can use Warp Cannons)
• Star 2 - Collect all 24 Star Coins in World 9
• Star 3 - Beat every "normal" level in the game,i.e., you don't need to find Secret Goals.
• Star 4 - Collect all 207 Star Coins in the first 8 Worlds
• Star 5 - Beat every level, find every secret goal and use all of the Warp Cannons.
• 5 "Sparkly" Stars - Get all five stars without making a Luigi Block appear (you cannot die 8 times in a row on a single level)

Unlockable: Super Guide Mode

Die in a level 8 times and the game will give you the option to turn on an "Auto Pilot" mode in which Mario completes the level on his own. This appears as a green Super Guide block (with a ! on it) in the the level. Hit it to activate the mode and you'll be able to watch Luigi finish the level for you.

Note: There is no Super Guide for World 9.

Grab a bicycle (this works better if your bike skills are all the way up) make sure you have a weapon you can fire on your bike, hold down L1, right. This comes in handy!

When you enter the Johnson house there is a TV to your right with a game console on the floor in front of it, if you approach it, it will give the option to play a "Starship" game.

Hint: Bullet Proof Cars

During the mission "High Stakes, Low Rider", keep the competition closely behind you until the pier finish line. Once the race is over the other cars appear behind you.

With another car or by just walking, push Ceasar's red car up the pier and over the edge of the sidewalk into your nearby safe house garage to the left. What's the point of all this? Not only is it a pimp red car, it's also BULLET PROOF, which helps alot this early in the game.

Easter Egg: Hoodlum Noteriety

When you finish some missions (for example: 555 we tip) listen to the radio. You'll hear the person talking about the mission just passed.

Easter Egg: Rockstar Cameos

In one of Zero's mission, where you have to use the machine gun to knock down the RC planes, you can see some action figures of Rockstar characters like Tommy Vercetti, Lance Vance, as well as characters from other games in Rockstar's line-up during Zero's dialogue.

Hint: Quick Hood Defence

While playing the game, your hood will undergo attacks from other factions. To save yourself some time and end these disaster quickly, simply jack any vehice in which you can access extra missions using R3 (i.e., police vehicles, fire vehicles, taxicabs, ambulance, et al.). Start and end the extra mission (press R3 and exit the vehicle) and your hood will no longer undergo attack.

  To start the pimping mission, enter a broadway (low-rider vehicle) and press R3. Drive the prostitutes to their destinations for big cash. After the tenth "trick" prostitutes PAY you rather than you paying them.

  To enable all the taxis in the game to have nitro drop off 50 people in the taxi mission. By pressing R3 the taxi can now hop and by pressing L1 or circle the taxi uses nitro.

Go out behind the house and into the aqueduct to the left. Go down the sloped wall of the aqueduct and head left. On an incline underneath the bridge, you'll find a handy vest.

Hint: Easy Money for Cleaning the Hood

Anytime you kill a drug dealer, you will net $2000. Drug dealers normally wear black jackets (some have white hoodies) and stand still waiting for people to talk to them. Kill as many as you can find to build up your cash stash quickly.
